PERSONALITY
"Don't let desperation cloud your judgment. That's what alcohol is for!”
Astarion is a creature who thrives on pleasure. He seeks it out wherever he can find it, heedless of the consequences that might befall someone else, and encourages others to do the same. Life is hard and full of pain and peril… why not take what he can? It's not as if anyone else is going to show him any kindness. Gods know no one ever has…
He is flamboyant and isn't afraid to give voice to his opinions, even when they might be controversial. He may come off as full of himself, but it is an act to hide his insecurities and all the trauma he has suffered. In truth, he just wants to be understood and loved, but doesn't believe anyone will ever genuinely care for him.
HISTORY
WARNING. MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ASTARION'S BACKSTORY IN BALDUR'S GATE 3.
Two hundred years ago, Astarion was a magistrate in Baldur's Gate. He did his duty, but some of the verdicts were not popular. When one such verdict saw one of their fellows behind bars, a group of Gur attacked the pale elf in the street and left him to bleed out. But it was not to be. He was found by a man who promised him life, if he but serve him, and desperate to live, he agreed.
This proved to be a very grave mistake, for death would have been preferable to the torment the vampire lord Cazador Szarr put him through. Astarion found that he could deny his new master nothing. Even when directed to torture himself or other vampire spawn, even when he was directed to feed upon the rats that scuttled across the floor, he could not resist the vampire's demands. When his flesh wasn't being used a canvas for blood-soaked poetry, Astarion served his master faithfully, seducing young beauties to the Szarr manor so that Cazador could feast upon them while he watched on in jealous hunger.
It was during one such hunt, when he was trying to lure a noble that he was abducted by the Nauteloid passing overhead. The mind flayers aboard the ship had plans for him, it seemed, for into his eye they placed a squirming, writhing parasite. As it wriggled into his socket, the plain raging in his skull, he wished for death. He wished to be carried away, for all of this to be traded for something better. Why did this have to happen to him? Was wanting to escape death such a sin that he deserved such punishment? All he wanted was to be free!
And then, when he awoke, he found that he was just that. A new world, ripe for the taking… No Cazador. No mind flayers.
But there would be, if that parasite had anything to say about it. Of that he was sure. So he hunted, desperate for a cure. A day passed, then two. No luck, but also… no change.
He should have sprouted tentacles and shed his skin, should have become one of the things that had infested him, but he remained healthy and whole. What's more, he could stand in the sunlight and not burn for the first time in two centuries.
Oh, he could get used to this.
There is, of course, still the worry that he will transform at any moment, but… rather than rid himself of the little mite, perhaps he could instead learn to control it? Perhaps this had been a blessing in disguise?
It wasn't long before he found himself a place to work: the Elderberry Cemetery. It was a crumbling place, its owner too old to maintain it. Soon enough, the old man died, leaving it in Astarion's capable hands. In his attempts to restore the establishment to its former glory, he stumbled upon the catacombs beneath it, and an idea began to form. Not long after, the guild of assassins known as the Ferrymen of Gallows Bay came to fruition. In the year since, the fledgling guild has grown substantially, raking in gold, renown, and opportunities.

FRIENDS
Astarion is not easy to truly befriend beyond the surface level. He'll be civil if you get along well, but unless he knows for certain that he can trust you, that you're someone he can count on, he won't open up. That being said, he enjoys the company of like-minded people who validate his beliefs when it comes to pleasure and freedom.
ENEMIES
He's a vampire spawn, so enemies abound. Any monster hunter and even most monsters are no friends of his… especially fellow vampires. He also takes issue with those who are overly nice and pleasant, or fail to prioritize their own wants and needs. While they might not be outright enemies, he'll make his distaste for them very clear.
LOVERS
Trust is essential if he is ever to find a lover. They need to be alright with not only what he is, but his past, and be willing to stand by his side regardless of what the future holds. Only then can he be vulnerable enough to share himself–and his heart–with someone else.
