Kaine was walking about the hallways, wearing civilian clothing as a t-shirt and some jean pants. He seemed to be in one of those low morale moods. Kaine appeared to be in deep thought, his mind racing like it usually did. The spider hero walked across the floor. The spider hero counted all the steps it made. It took exactly 327 steps to get to the bedroom, towards the cafeteria, and even more to get to the other parts of the hallway. He had been thinking about a lot of things lately. His self-doubt. Forgiving himself and the past and what Madame Webb had said earlier. Even if he did say it 1, 000 times. Kaine knew forgiving himself wasn’t easy.
As he rounded the corner, his distracted thoughts were there as he had a glancing blow. Something hit him hard on the shoulder as someone went passed him as he had at first thought it was one of the Octobots or Doc Ock for that matter. Then there was a loud thwack! As something hit him. “Hey! watch it-” He was cut off as he realized it wasn’t any of those. It was Aunt May. Kaine held his shoulder a bit. It throbbed for a few minutes, and the pain ebbed away. Next time he should be the one to be a bit more careful.
WAIT Aunt MAY?
This one looked familiar. Yet, at the same time, Kaine thought he saw a ghost. Was this the Aunt May from his dimension? There was only one way to find out. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t realize it was you.” He said as he apologized.
“Kaine? I knew it was you the moment I saw you. Good to see someone I know other than Otto. It has been ages.” May said as she smiled at him. “I should be the one apologizing to you. I wasn’t looking where I was going.” She looked at him for a bit squinting her eyes as if studying him. She put a hand on his shoulder. “You look different, but I like it. You’ve grown up the last time I saw you. You've seen a lot of good and bad. And maybe get a bit wiser. Still grumpy?” She said with a partial tease.
“There is a lot been going on a lot on my mind… A lot of pressure… No one trusted me. Nothing is working. If we do see him, I have something to tell Otto... I'm certainly not leadership material. Doubt I ever will be.” Kaine muttered as his head hung low enough to show the scar on his eye as it was obvious, in the light. He felt ashamed admitting it in front of Aunt May. A part of him dreaded telling Otto this news. But it shouldn't have been a total surprise. If he could catch Otto at a good time, where he wasn't angry he'd have to tell him then and now. He already felt slightly nervous, afraid of failure. Something he was familiar with his whole life. But he knew they could find another leader for the Web Warriors. Even that Miguel kid was a better pick. Even if Otto is disappointed in him, hopefully time will pass on and he can learn to be a leader.
“Don’t worry, Kaine. You’ll find the right thing to do when the time comes. Peter was the same way. I’m not comparing you, Kaine, to Peter. You are your person. Your being. Just remember that.” May said as he was glad to have found someone from his dimension. How did she get here? How did she get up here? Then it realized that Otto might’ve invited her up. For once, he didn’t seem to be so lost anymore, like there was some comfort.
“Let me guess, Otto invited you here? Something like that?” He asked as May nodded in agreement. “Hm, we could find something interesting to or ask Otto maybe he’s in his lab.” She added as they began to head around the corner towards the scientist’s lab. Kaine wondered if there was anything for him to do today. His sadness or self-doubt from earlier had started to disappear. Just seeing a face from his dimension was enough to cheer him up just a little bit.
“As for Otto, I’m not sure if we should disturb him. He’s been so busy with his work…” Kaine said knowing a visit might do anyone good if it were your friends. "Why don't we try the observatory? Someone is bound to be there." Kaine added knowing there were probably a million places to check for any sign of life on the ship.
