As a little girl, Clem displayed remarkable maturity and intelligence for a girl her age. She was intuitive, well-behaved, and personable to most of the adults in her group. However, she did carry a childish innocence and naivete. As time went on her childish traits melted away, leaving a hardened survivor in its wake.
While intelligence and intuitiveness have remained, Clem has become distrustful of strangers and groups, considering other humans more dangerous than the dead. She is fiercely independent and strives to take care of herself and her loved ones. She has adopted a killer instinct of sorts over the years and no longer bats an eye at taking a human life. She is resourceful, clever, courageous, and a survivalist through and through.
History:
Clementine was small and weak when the world began to end. Her parents had left for vacation to Atlanta while she was left behind with her babysitter Sandra. The infection had already spread to their town and neither of them had known it. Eventually, Sandra was bitten, and Clem watched as her babysitter turned into the very same monsters that lurked outside. Clem left the house, locking the walker inside, and went up to the treehouse for refuge. She likely would've starved to death in that tree house had a man not stumbled into her backyard a few days later. A man named Lee Everett. When he found her, he vowed to protect her and help her find her family. Clem went and never looked back.
Their journey throughout the state of Georgia had proved to be a dangerous one that dragged them from a farm to a motel, to another farm inhabited by a family of cannibals, to the very same city that her parents had left for. Without Lee's knowledge, Clem had been conversing with a strange man on the radio. The man urged her not to tell the other adults of their contact, which she unfortunately complied. A decision she would come to regret when the stranger kidnapped her. Lee had come to rescue her and succeeded for a high price. He had been bitten. It is said that cutting off a limb shortly after a bite could possibly save the person's life, but the option had been removed for Lee. It had already been too long. Now Clem was faced with a choice: leave her dying friend behind or put him down herself. The gun had felt impossibly heavy in her hands when she worked up the courage to end Lee's suffering. She had just turned nine.
Christa and Omid, a couple that had joined the group before, found Clem and took her in. Her life consisted of moving around the state before one faithful day a bandit had cornered Clem in an old bathroom. Omid had tried to save her and was shot and killed in the process. Christa was never the same after that. Now eleven years old, tragedy struck again. Bandits had attacked Christa and Clem separating the two. Clem never saw Christa again.
Clem, injured and tired, stumbled upon a new group. This one seemed dysfunctional and broken but what other choice did she have? She traveled with them until they stumbled into another group of survivors. One among them was a face she never thought she would see again, Kenny. Their reunion was brutally cut short when a man named Carver came and forced both groups to join his community as slaves. The group banded together to resist Carver's tyranny and to escape leading to the destruction of Carver's community and the man himself, which Clem gladly watched.
Back on the road again, Rebecca, now nine months pregnant had finally begun to give birth. The baby survived, but Rebecca did not. Soon the group's numbers dwindled down to Clem, Kenny, Jane, and newborn baby, AJ. Jane and Kenny fought constantly. This eventually escalated into a violent brawl between the two. Clem had begged them to stop, her hands clasped around a firearm as she aimed at Kenny. Her hands shook as she lost her nerve and Kenny took Jane's life. Horrified by the actions of her friend, Clem left with AJ to fend for herself.
Three years later, a new community had formed. A place called "The New Frontier." Skeptical of groups after her passed experiences Clem had given up on the idea of humanity, instead opting to look out for herself and AJ, now a young toddler. However, as winter drew nearer and she grew more desperate she accepted the community's offer for help. A decision she would come to regret. AJ had fallen deathly ill. In her desperation, Clem stole medicine she believed would save AJ's life. For her transgression, she was kicked out of the New Frontier. Even worse, AJ was taken from her. Even more angry and distrustful of others than she was before, Clementine's heart hardened.
Clem continued to live on, fighting tooth and nail for her survival until she came across a man named Javier, who had grievances against the New Frontier. After helping him escape from the group's clutches she aided him and his family in their pursuit of revenge only to discover that David, Javier's own brother and the man that took AJ, was one of the founders of the New Frontier. The New Frontier proved to be a corrupt community, killing and pillaging the resources of others. As the truth came out about the true nature of the community's other leaders, Javier and David with the help of Clementine caused a bloody revolution that led to the community becoming overrun with walkers. They had come out on top at the end but had done so at the price of Kate's life. Through Javier, Clementine was reunited with Dr. Lingard, the man who knew AJ's whereabouts. She begged him to tell her where he was. And agreed to it on one condition, she had to kill him. Javier protested the morality of assisting in Lingard's suicide, but Clem persisted. Lingard was only halfway through the lethal injection when he told Clem where the child was. McCarrol Ranch. With a new hope fluttering in her chest, she left Javier in search of the boy she had practically raised.
McCarrol Ranch had been overrun with walkers. Fearing for the worst, Clem pressed on. She could still remember the relief she had felt when she had found him, and they way his crying eased as she held him in her arms for the first time in months. In that moment she vowed, nothing would ever come between them again.
As the years went by, Clem watched as AJ became an even more capable survivor than she was at his AJ. Now six and seventeen respectively, the two had lived their entire lives on the road with only walkers and violent humans between them. The two were thick as thieves, never truly having a place to call home until they stumbled upon Ericson's Boarding Shool for Trouble Youth. The school had been abandoned by the adults but a handful of the students had managed to survive, protected by the walls of the campus and fed by the bountiful forest that surrounded them. While the stay had it's ups and downs, it finally felt like the two had finally found a place to call home.
The peace was incredibly short-lived. The leader, Marlon, a boy a little older than Clem had struck a deal with an aggressive community called the Delta in order to ensure the safety of the other kids. What was the deal? Giving any able-bodied youth to the Delta as child soldiers to serve in their wars against other communities, which he planned to do to Clementine. Clem learned of Marlon's treachery through a frightened and dying Brodie. Fearing losing his position as leader Marlon tried to blame Brodie's death on Clementine and threatened to kill her. Louis had tried to talk Marlon down and succeeded, though that didn't stop AJ from shooting Marlon dead.
With tensions high and a massive threat looming over Ericson, the kids banded together to have a last stand against the Delta. The fight lasted most of the night and the kids had failed. Violet, Omar, and Aasim were taken, and Mitch was killed. With the fire of defiance in Clem's chest she sought to bring the fight to the Delta, and so, she led an attack against them. Using the bomb Mitch had crafted Clem, Louis and AJ snuck aboard the ship that the Delta soldiers temporarily called home. Creeping their way to the boiler they placed the bomb and made their way to the brig to free their friends. Though their plans were foiled.
Her head pounded as she stared into the face of the woman who had beaten the snot out of her, a face she was sure she would never see again, Lilly. Lilly had been there since the beginning. She had watched over her when Lee would leave camp, and now she was the face of the Delta community. Clem watched as an injured Lilly begged AJ not to pull the trigger. The boy only spared Clem a glance as she urged him to kill her. Only one shot had gone off before the bomb was triggered and the boat's boiler room blew up. Clem felt herself fly and crash against the metal of the ship's deck. Smoke clouded her already blurred vision as she struggled to breathe in the smoke. At that moment, she wished to be anywhere but here. She wished to be somewhere safe. Somewhere where she and AJ could live freely and safely.
