Please make sure you write out the following in your own words.
Appearance:(A good description of what your character looks like)
Casper Darling looks like everybody's goofy science professor. He's rarely seen without a lab coat and a bow tie- often with a sweater vest, as well. He's just slightly taller than average at 6' even, but is more likely to be called scrawny than large. His large, omnipresent smile is just a tad crooked, adding a vague aura of schoolboy mischief to his otherwise very buttoned up appearance.
Weapons: (Do they carry any weapons? If not leave blank)
Powers/Magic After contact with the extra-dimensional entity known as Hedron, Darling has limited precognitive abilities in the form of disjointed visions
Physical Abilities:(Enhanced speed, strength ect.)
Weaknesses:
- Gets hyperfocused on his work to the exclusion of common sense, morality, and self preservation
- Way too easily charmed into making bad choices
- Genuinely the worst taste in men- the last two he even expressed interest in tried to kill him and destroy the world
- No people skills other than being a teacher
- Conflict averse
- Terrible sense of humor
-
Likes:(At least five.)
- Single Malt whiskey
- emotionally unavailable men
- science
- teaching
- film making (specifically Edutainment films)
- very competent people
Dislikes:(At least five)
- Paperwork
- confrontation
- being asked why he's not married
- the casual societal assumption that science is boring
- bad methodology
- people who coopt science to be hateful
- Pop science
- Basically anything that he theorizes causes significant impediment to the field of scientific exploration
Friends/Relatives:
Darling has no known relatives and only 'socializes' with coworkers
Significant Other/Love Interest:
Thomas Zayne (deceased/imaginary/dead? It's complicated)
Zachariah Trench (deceased)
Personality:(At least two good paragraphs.)
Casper Darling's is a simple man in that he has dedicated his life to a few specific things and doesn't do much else. He's less simple in that the specific things that he's dedicated his life to are mostly scientific study- into other dimensions and the life forms there, into latent psychic ability, into the nature of all the things mainstream science would have never let him study. And also that his obsession with his work keeps inspiring ill advised secret relationships with coworkers.
But ultimately, he's a quirky, deliberately cheerful man who always seems to have a smile and a dad joke for anyone he comes across. Even when completely alone, he prefers to maintain the persona of a Bill Nye-esque educator when under stress. It seems to genuinely soothe him to explain things as though he's teaching someone about them, as he continues making videos about the imminent danger of the Hiss and the Dark Place long after he had any reasonable expectation that anyone would even see them.
History:
Dr. Casper Darling was not a child genius. He was a bright child who reliably made good grades and was always way too interested in some odd topic, but he got a lot of report cards complaining that he never applied himself to his schoolwork. He muddled along as the weird kid who knew too much about space and the code of chivalry and entomology and the history of filmmaking, until a particularly good high school biology teacher changed his life. Recognizing a bored, clever child when he saw one, he encouraged an interest in science- and tactfully clued a very confused teenage boy into a few things neither his parents nor his 80s sex ed class would cover. Once Darling realized what the world of science had to offer, he dove in wholeheartedly, heading to college and discovering the burgeoning field of parapsychology. He blazed through his undergrad and flung himself headfirst into paranormal research in graduate school. His work, primarily focused on multiversal theory, caught the attention of the Federal Bureau of Control, which hired him shortly after he achieved his PHD.
The FBC was a dream come true for a man with endless curiosity and a lack of interest in sunlight or the outside world. Even the building he now worked in, what they called the 'Oldest House', was an extradimensional puzzle in itself! Furthermore, he and his mentor/boss at the bureau, the head of the research department, took a personal interest in Darling's studies-eventually naming Darling his successor. Another colleague, Zachariah Trench, took a more personal interest in Darling himself- the two of them forming a very personal bond once Trench's wife left him. Due to their positions- with Trench becoming the new Director fairly abruptly- they kept the full nature of their relationship private. Publicly, Darling was one of Trench's four lieutenants-no more, no less. What the two men did after hours was their own business. The FBC was much less concerned with the sexuality of their employees than other government branches, after all. Things were... well, not precisely ideal, what with the extent of his love life being whiskey and getting bent over desks or tables in out of the way corners of the Oldest House by his boss. But they were stable, all the way up until the Faden children found an old slide projector in a junkyard in Ordinary. The Ordinary Altered World Event (or AWE) was a game changer for Trench's plans for his 'prime candidate program' (a way of training and selecting a qualified candidate to take over after Trench's tenure ended) and for Darling's extradimensional research. The slide projector could open doors to other dimensions- though only one slide was left after the children's attempt to contain the disaster.
Dylan Faden, the younger sibling of the two, was a natural choice for the Prime Candidate program- except that he never recovered from the disappearance of his missing sister. He was, like his sister, a powerful parautilitarian (person with paranormal abilities)- but an emotionally unstable teenage boy with superpowers and a grudge was a bad combination. Darling stood by Dylan and Trench's program, but the death toll unfortunately spoke for itself. The Prime Candidate Program was shuttered, Dylan banished to a plexiglass high security cell. This was devastating, but still paled in comparison to the other disaster connected to that AWE. The slide projector that had sealed the fates of every adult resident of Ordinary was recovered along with the younger Faden, and it was an object of intense study. There was only one intact slide left- the one occupied by the organism Jesse Faden called 'Polaris' and Darling called 'Hedron'. The slidescape was extremely dangerous, occupied by resonance based organisms- including Hedron herself. Darling found her fascinating, and had Hedron carefully brought into the Oldest House for research, where Darling attempted to communicate with her, allowing Hedron to form a psychic link with him and possibly even more than that- openly admitting to 'exposing himself to Hedron's resonance'. This allowed him to get warning of the impending threat. Trench, overseeing some of the research expeditions, found a very different entity. Composed of resonance like Hedron, the Hiss made contact with the Director via a memetic earworm, with Trench woefully unprepared for a hostile entity who could influence his own thoughts. Hedron and the Hiss were opposites- possibly even arch enemies. With Darling under the influence of Hedron and Trench influenced by the Hiss, their relationship broke down. Assisted by Hedron, Darling built devices to prevent the Hiss from taking root in human minds; Trench, believing the Hiss to be the heroes and Hedron to be a thread, did the unthinkable. The slides that had been burned were nto completely unuseable- merely warped and dangerous. In his very last act as the Director, he opened a doorway with one of the damaged slides that allowed the Hiss to invade the Oldest House en masse. Within hours, everyone in the building without one of Darling's devices for protection was possessed- and those who had the devices were forced to go into hiding or be murdered by the shells of their former coworkers and friends. Darling was caught on his own when the lockdowns kicked in, but persevered in studying the Hiss and Hedron and documenting his progress, even as prologued exposure to Hedron seemingly started to break him down. In his last message recorded from the Bureau, he spoke of Hedron showing him 'something wonderful', and implied that he would with her help be travelling to another plane of existence.
After that, Dr. Darling was never seen again in the living world-although his continued documentation of his studies did continue from within an extradimensional space tied to another AWE. It was there that he met poet, actor, and filmmaker Thomas Zayne. Zayne may or may not be real in the human world, but he was charming, handsome, and perhaps most importantly, the only other human being Darling could find. Their intimate connection seemed inevitable the moment they clapped eyes on each other- but that didn't stop Zayne from betraying him in his own attempts to escape the Dark Place.
