As Clem went off to school, Ash closed the shop for an hour to make a supply run. Let's see, he needed eggs and milk and bread and everything else a growing teenage girl needs. Now that that was out of the way, it was time to grab a few things HE needed! After filling the cart with cheap beer and some heart-clogging cured meat, he checked out and decided to head to a certain area to finish up the day.
The Lower Ring wasn’t exactly as clean as the rest of the city; in fact, it was a dump. Most of the jerks and lowlifes who were zapped to this place settled here. It sort of reminded him of Elk Grove in a way, it had bums and dim lighting and hookers, and well..he just felt at home for some reason. Also, since there was no one in charge of this place, that also meant no drug laws! How much more could he possibly ask for? But his favorite part was the line of vending machines outside of a really seedy strip joint. They sold everything! Drugs, bongs, underwear, condoms, drugs, umbrellas, drugs, and those cute little toys in plastic eggs…and drugs. He was in stoner heaven!
As he approached the machines, Ash stopped and began to fish out whatever change he had on him; as he leaned over to pick up a coin, he unknowingly was about to bump into someone behind him.

Laurie was much more used to buying her weed at a dispensary than places like this- she'd ditched the seedy backalley dealers easily thirty years ago. Granted, her first choice was generally her own plants, but she hadn't had time to get the garden up and running at her new compound yet. She hadn't yet found one of those dreadful dispensaries she'd hated so much either, which meant weird shady vending machines were her only real option.
She could handle herself down here, it was mostly just annoying to have to risk a fight just to get her hands on some flower. Out of habit and an abundance of caution, she was carrying her usual weaponry, shotgun half hidden under her bag but still easy to retrieve if needed. The bag was much more likely to be important- her trip to the vending machine wasn't her only business in this hellhole, and the supplies she had retrieved for the compound were best not carried openly in case some asshole thought the old woman was easy pickings for a thief.
What she hadn't expected, however, was a clumsy guy with a mechanical hand dropping his change and backing directly into her. She'd never even seen anyone else use this machine, and it felt like terrible luck that this guy had chosen to do so right now. "Careful there." She told the stranger, politely but firmly. "This really isn't the kind of place you want to be dropping your money. Especially if you're half as drunk as you smell like you must be. Just get your drugs and keep moving, you're not the only customer."
