Nancy sat at her bed in the Hufflepuff Tower, a look of concentration on her face as she tried to read the letter that had just arrived from Tina, who still kept in contact with her despite her leaving when she was just eleven years old and making the transfer from America to here. The room was filled with the sound of laughter and chatter as her peers prepared for the day.
As Nancy struggled to focus on the words on the parchment, she couldn't help but notice the strong scent of hairspray that filled the air. Her friends were busy styling their hair for the outing, each trying to outdo the other with elaborate updos and cascading curls.
Just as she reached the most crucial part of the letter, a particularly potent cloud of hairspray wafted in her direction, causing her to cough and sputter. Her attempts to stifle the noise were in vain, and soon the entire room fell silent, all eyes turning to Nancy.
"Sorry, sorry!" one of the girls apologized, looking ever so glamorous. Nancy gasped between coughs, waving her hand in front of her face in a futile attempt to clear the air. Her friends burst into giggles at her expense, their hair forgotten as they watched Nancy's dramatic reaction.
"Are you alright, Nancy?" one of her friends asked, her eyes glittering with innocent mischief.
Nancy nodded, a hint of a cough escaping her once again as she composed herself. "I think I'll manage," she said with a sheepish smile, a touch of humor in her voice. Despite her words, she wasn't actually annoyed. "But next time, could you please warn me before transforming me into a walking Aqua Net commercial? I've already been compared to the Doublemint twins by you-know-who."
He was such a bully sometimes. But she couldn’t say a bad thing about him to the others, for most of them were rather crazy about that class clown of a boy.
The girls erupted into laughter once more, the tension broken as they returned to their primping and preening. Nancy shook her head with a chuckle, setting the letter aside for the moment. Despite the interruption, she couldn't help but be grateful that she got along with nearly everyone in the girls dormitory.
The Hufflepuff student casually slipped into her robe, the soft fabric partially concealing her pink cardigan. Below, she chose her usual khaki trousers, a practical decision for the day ahead. With Care of Magical Creatures class taking place outdoors, she wanted to be prepared - the last thing she needed was to be covered in mosquito bites by the end of the lesson.
With that, they all left in unison for their upcoming class…

As the students gathered around the open field, the crisp autumn air filled with anticipation and excitement. Professor Liverwart, the esteemed teacher of Care of Magical Creatures, stood before the class with a knowing smile, his eyes twinkling with mischief and knowledge.
"Good morning, young witches and wizards!" Professor Liverwart's voice boomed across the field, capturing the attention of every student. "Today, we have a special guest joining us for our lesson on magical creatures. Behold, the majestic creature known as the griffin!"
With a grand gesture, Liverwart signaled to the skies above. A magnificent griffin descended from the clouds, its wings outstretched and golden feathers shimmering in the sunlight. The students gasped in awe as the creature landed gracefully in the center of the field, its lion-like body and eagle-like head a sight to behold.
"Now, my dear students, the griffin is a proud and noble creature with a fierce loyalty to those it deems worthy," Professor Liverwart explained, his eyes gleaming with reverence. "Approach with respect and caution, and you shall earn its trust."
The students watched in rapt attention as Liverwart demonstrated the proper way to approach a griffin. He moved slowly, keeping his movements deliberate and his gaze steady. The griffin regarded him with watchful eyes, its sharp talons flexing on the ground.
"Remember, the griffin is a creature of great intelligence and sensitivity," Professor Liverwart continued. "Speak to it softly, offer it a gesture of friendship, and above all, show it kindness and respect."
One by one, the students took turns approaching the griffin, their hearts pounding with a mixture of fear and excitement. With each gentle interaction, the griffin seemed to relax, its majestic aura softening as it allowed the students to come closer. Now it was a certain clown’s turn. “Mr. Ashley Williams, if you would kindly step forth and befriend this magnificent creature? Extend the gentleness you are capable of!”

Hogwarts is supposedly the greatest magic school in Britain. As one of the few American magical exchange students, Ash made the best of his time there. He was tossed into Ravenclaw by the sorting book, a hideous novel of forgotten lore with a face only the back end of a double-decker bus would love. It hated him from the moment he picked the damn thing up; it even burned the palm of his right hand slightly, leaving a mark.
Born to two non-magical parents, called Muggles, Ash had no idea magic was real until he turned eleven and things started happening. He was at their family's summer cabin when he started the campfire just by looking at it and almost decapitated his sister by accident. It was then the crow with an envelope came, and he was sent to Ilvermorny. He soon became quite popular among the female students and rather hated among the males he either outshined or outfought and was unanimously chosen by the student board to be sent as far away as possible…
So now he was here, watching a bunch of green first-years playing around with a giant catbird as he leaned against a nearby tree with his arms folded and a pair of dark sunglasses on his head. Forced to wear full-length judge robe that looked like a dress and scarf. Ash hated the uniforms here, blue and white looked so lame compared to the red and gold of his former Thunderbird house. And why a scarf? Was everyone going for the Paddington Bear look or what? Hearing his name he grunted before pushing himself off the tree and wandering over to the animal in front of the group and smirked.
“Before I do, I got a question. Does it all taste like chicken, or just the bird parts? Does it knock stuff off the table? Does is poop in a box or just where it feels like?” He said with a grin as the griffin snarled slightly, causing the group to snicker behind him.

Melodious laughter pealed from the young girls, admiring the handsome, mouthy boy in sunglasses. As mirth filled the air, one girl's comically loud laughter waned under her boyfriend’s withering gaze, a reminder that she wasn’t single. Nancy, and not a whole lot of others, wore a disapproving countenance, observing the audacity through thick lashes.
"A-hem," the professor cleared his throat, fixing the student with a severe look. "I feel compelled to remind you that griffins are noble and discerning creatures, not to be relegated to mere objects of fascination or frivolity."
A low, ominous rumble emanated from the griffin, a growl pregnant with warning that could prompt even the bravest to retreat.
"I can assure you they do not possess the flavor profile of poultry, nor do they utilize a litter-box," Professor Liverwart continued, his voice unwavering. The bird-like entity unfurled its grand wings, a manifestation of its dominion and dignity, almost as if to underscore the professor's admonition. The contrast between the teacher and the beast became evident as, without warning, the bird unleashed a chilling cry.
Nancy's annoyed expression shifted to one of concern as she dreaded that any abrupt movement might provoke the animal to charge at Ash. The onlookers held their breath as the professor swiftly pivoted around and tenderly extended his arms in an attempt to calm his feathered companion. However, the bird's wing roughly brushed against the teacher, causing him to stumble backward, while the creature violently shook its head, its feathers bristling on its massive frame.
Grateful for her petite stature, she deftly seized her wand and skillfully maneuvered through the small group of students, using them as cover to conceal her slender figure. With wide blue eyes and slightly parted lips, she made a conscious effort to control her breathing, unsure whether the creature had sensitive hearing. Observing solely through body language, she surmised that it might be granting him an opportunity to show respect. However, acknowledging her lack of expertise, she considered that her interpretation could be merely wishful thinking.
Liverwort, with a fearful motion that bespoke both caution and graveness, rose to his feet, careful not to disturb the already flustered beast. In a tone tinged with trepidation and respect, he addressed Mr. Williams, "My dear boy, now is hardly the moment for jests. Goddard, you see, is a creature of immense pride. Having ensnared his attention, your approach must be one of deliberate slowness, culminating in a reverent bow. His response, or lack thereof, shall be the harbinger of your fate. Fear not, for should he withhold his acknowledgment, I shall be your guide. Yet, to remain inert in this pivotal instant would court calamity of the highest order."
Nancy didn’t really like the look of this.
She dodged behind the tree he was close to but was met with another presence.
“Nancy, please, you have to save him,” came a plea that nearly made Nancy jump out of her skin. She let out a muffled squeak as a hand clamped over her mouth, and she shot a quick glance at the girl holding her, looking visibly upset. Nevertheless, she got the message.
"What do you think I'm doing, Rose?" Nancy whispered back. It was touching to see how much her friend cared about the boy, but that was precisely why Nancy was doing everything she could to be prepared for the worst.
"He's just too dreamy to die like this!" Rose Vineyard whispered a bit louder.
"Shut up and let me focus, will you?" The plucky Hufflepuff hissed softly, a hint of exasperation in her voice as she watched the scene unfold. She hoped she didn’t have to intervene, but she would lend him her aid if he needed it.
“That’s my future husband!” squeaked her friend gently, close to sobbing. Nancy rolled her eyes and slapped a hand over Rose’s mouth right back. She needed to quiet the absolute fuck down.
