"I doubt they would cause harm."
Lucius was fairly certain the fast travel portals didn't cause harm. However, he preferred to Apparate everywhere.
"Well, they were not severe injuries. Indeed. Although, you are preoccupied."
He raised an eyebrow at the creature's purring.
"I wouldn't go so far as to call it a friend."

Amos always attempted to learn something from his past. Positive or negative. ''I'm just worried about getting hurt again.'' He bit his lip for a second. Amos refused to remember past injuries. He worried about possible future ones.
''I suppose I am always preoccupied with something. Gathering crowds for my master some time ago. The idea of unity.''
Amos heard the creature as it continued to purr.
''Well, it could be friendly.'' Amos wasn't exactly eager to approach it without caution. He crouched and stretched his arm. Amos watched as the creature sniffed. If he was lucky, his hand wasn't going to be bitten. Scratched.

Lucius nodded at the preacher's words. "That is understandable." He too preferred to avoid injury, except when his family was in danger.
"Indeed. Even now, that seems to be the case. Hmmm."
Lucius kept his attention focused on the creature in case it tried to make a meal out of his current companion. "All the same, I would exercise caution."

''I won't underestimate anyone or anything again,'' Amos said. He frowned another time. Then again, some habits were difficult to break. How often did he let his guard down? Amos couldn't remember. Wouldn't remember.
Amos nodded about caution.
Eyes remained on the creature.
''Well, it's not biting my hand. So far.'' Amos heard the creature as it purred. He viewed it stepping back. Tilting its head to the side. ''Oh. So it's curious.''

"A wise decision on your part," Lucius replied. He knew underestimating others, especially one's enemies, was not a good idea.
"For the moment. However, animals can be unpredictable." He raised an eyebrow at the creature. "Unless you happen to be mistaking curiosity for something else."

A wise decision? Amos certainly never considered himself to be wise. He was certainly reckless at times. Mostly with his alien identity. He had to be a bit more careful recently. Especially with the heat and unknown creatures wandering.
Frowning, Amos gave one nod about animals being unpredictable.
''It seems curious to me,'' Amos said after he shrugged.
The animal didn't seem aggressive so far. ''At least it's not snarling at us.'' Amos wondered if he jinxed them. He kept his eye on the animal. He never dared turn his back on it. Was the creature going to approach them quickly? There wasn't any way for him to know.

Lucius gave a single nod in response to Amos' words.
"For the time being," Lucius pointed out.
He was not going to underestimate this creature. "That is true, although lowering one's guard is not the best idea." He was prepared to use his magic, should the creature suddenly decide to attack.

Was the creature going to go from being content to aggressive? Amos had no idea. His frown came back. He turned to Lucius another time.
''Is there any way of knowing when an animal's behavior will switch?''
Amos nodded about not lowering his guard. Again, something he tried to work on. He then smiled.
''At least I'm not focusing on the heat.'' If there was a bright side to the current situation. Amos kept his eye on the creature again. He heard its purr. Well, it appeared to remain happy. Was anything able to set it off? Maybe some things were better off not knowing.
The creature appeared to be curious again.
Then fangs were bared.
Amos heard a snarl before his eyes widened.

"I believe it depends on the animal."
"That is a bonus, I suppose." Lucius kept his eyes on the creature and tensed when it bared its fangs and snarled at the preacher.

''Does the creature sense that I'm not exactly human?'' Amos attempted to remember if other animals snarled or hissed at him. ''If I remember correctly, animals always sense when there's something wrong. A situation. Appearances. Other nonhumans,'' he said.
Amos had his humanity removed some time ago. When Unity appeared in Smallville and forced him to become his priest.
''Yet the creature seemed happy earlier. Maybe it has mood swings?'' Amos muttered. He shrugged. He kept his eye on the animal before it then turned and left.
Amos tilted his head to the side as confusion filled his eyes.

"It could be possible." Lucius knew some creatures could sense Animagi that were in their animal forms. "I know of some creatures that are able to sense an Animagus in their animal form," he replied.
"Hmm. I doubt animals get mood swings," Lucius mused. As the creature suddenly left, he replaced his wand inside his cane and resumed his search for ingredients.

''I'm attempting to remember animals sensing something about me before. In Smallville. Even Metropolis. Animals tensing or snarling. Maybe two at the same time. I'm not exactly certain,'' Amos said. His frown remained.
''Which Animagus do you know?''
Animals don't get mood swings? ''Interesting,'' Amos muttered in one thoughtful tone. He was relieved after he remembered the animal left.
''Then again, there could be other animals just like it around. I like unity, but... Not when groups attempt to hurt us. Was the previous animal strong on its own? Not to me. In numbers? Yes.''

"I have no idea, as I do not know anything about animals in your world," Lucius replied. He was not the most knowledgeable when it came to animals, even in his own world.
"None at present, as Animagi are quite rare."
He hope there were no more hostile creatures around. "I hope not, I am not sure if my magic would be effective against a group."

Eyes were a bit wide with shock for a second.
''There are different sorts of animals in Smallville. House pets. Red-tailed hawks. Coyotes. Foxes. Raccoons. Squirrels.''
Amos then understood about Animagi. ''How rare are they?'' he asked. Amos wondered if he would have been able to tell Animagi and regular animals apart. Most likely no.
''I might be able to protect us from a group. Assuming a tentacle can defeat more than a handful of animals. I could battle groups in my alien form, but I hate transforming. Too painful,'' Amos said. He shuddered. Regular tentacles were a bit easier for him to use. Smaller and able to stretch.

"Those are non-magical animals in my world."
Lucius was not surprised by the question regarding Animagi. "Very rare, as it is difficult magic and Animagi must be registered with the Ministry of Magic," he replied.
"I suppose that is reassuring," Lucius mused. He didn't have that much confidence in the preacher's abilities.
